Instruction and content is connected to Louisiana academic content standards and benchmarks, especially the Grade-Level Expectations for math, English/language arts, and/or reading. By tailoring each student’s program to his/her needs, AU is able to help students maximize their tutoring time.
Alternatives Unlimited (AU) has been providing educational services to urban school districts for nearly a decade. Four years ago, AU entered the tutoring arena and ever since has been helping students across the country improve standardized test performance, classroom performance, and grade level achievement. Alternatives Unlimited uses a combination of Louisiana certified teachers and college graduates to tutor the children and employs bilingual tutors as necessary.

Evidence of Effectiveness:
In academic year 2006/07 Alternatives Unlimited assessed all students in its tutoring programs. The average number of hours completed by the students was 24 hours. 100% of the students that completed the program made some gains in their math and/or reading scores. These students gained between 4 and 22 points with an average of 8 points gained by most students. 5% of the students tutored were High School students. 48% of the students were Primary grade students in grades K-3. 47% of the remaining students were intermediate and middle school students. 30% of all students were ELL students and 10% were special education students.
Type of Instruction:
AU utilizes a curriculum specifically designed for SES tutoring by Evans Newton Inc., (ENI) iTargetTeach Fundamentals. Included in the curriculum are pre-post test assessments, so that specific areas of academic need can be identified, and subsequent improvement later documented. We also provide parent materials to reinforce what is mastered in tutoring.
